Offset Portfolio Update: October 2025

Commons users have the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions through the monthly Climate Steward Subscription, flight offsets, and one-time gifts. The community supports a diverse set of proven climate solutions through the Commons Offset Portfolio.

We're excited to announce that since April 2021, the Commons community has supported over 105,394 tons of carbon offsets.

Introducing New Offset Partners

After evaluating a new round of cutting-edge offset projects, we’re introducing four exciting projects to the Commons Offset Portfolio.

Vaulted Deep: Biomass Carbon Removal & Storage

Vaulted Deep transforms organic waste into a carbon-rich slurry that it injects deep underground. Once injected, it can be safely stored for millenia.

The organic waste that Vaulted Deep uses – manure, treated sewage, paper sludge, and agricultural byproducts –  would otherwise decompose, polluting local air, water, and soil with carbon and methane.

Your purchase helps Vaulted Deep scale their injections into salt caverns with natural impermeability, 24/7 monitoring, and a history of safe storage for hydrocarbon liquids.

Takachar: Biochar Carbon Removal

Takachar converts agricultural residues into biochar: a stable, carbon-rich output that improves soil health and drought resistance.

Biochar’s high carbon content helps it resist degradation, with sequestration lasting potentially hundreds of years. Takachar’s proprietary, portable, small-scale pyrolyzers and software help rural farmers produce highly-durable, industrial-quality biochar, thereby promoting climate justice.

Typically, farmers burn agricultural residues in open areas, resulting in CO2 released into the atmosphere, greater pollution, and risk of wildfires. With Takachar’s technology, farmers can safely turn those residues into a product that will improve their soil health, increase crop yields, and restore degraded lands.

Mati Carbon: Enhanced Rock Weathering

Mati Carbon integrates finely crushed rock powder into farming systems, accelerating natural weathering processes that capture atmospheric CO₂ and transform it into stable carbonates that are ultimately transported into rivers and oceans.

Mati’s first project applies rock powder in flooded rice paddies, where waterlogged conditions accelerate weathering and enable durable carbon capture. Beyond carbon removal, the rock powder enriches soils with essential nutrients, improving yields and crop quality. By providing it free of cost, Mati helps farmers increase their incomes while building long-term soil health.

The rock powder is a waste by-product from existing mining operations in the Deccan Traps.

Exomad Green: Biochar Carbon Removal

Exomad Green converts sustainably harvested forestry residues into biochar: a stable, carbon-rich output that improves soil health and drought resistance.

Typically, these forestry residues would be burned in open areas, resulting in CO2 released into the atmosphere, greater pollution, and risk of wildfires. Instead, Exomad burns the residues in a controlled, low-oxygen environment, which leaves behind the carbon-rich material.

Biochar’s high carbon content helps it resist degradation, with sequestration lasting potentially hundreds of years. By restoring degraded lands and increasing crop yields, biochar usage can also help mitigate forest-clearing for agriculture.
