About InPlanet

Location: Brazil

Offset Type: Enhanced Rock Weathering

Duration: 1,000+ years

InPlanet partners with farmers in Brazil to accelerate natural processes that turn atmospheric CO2 into carbon-based rocks. InPlanet sources basalt rock powder, an abundantly available waste byproduct from nearby mining operations, and applies it to acidic, depleted soils. The warm, humid climate and heavy rainfall accelerate the speed at which the rock powder captures carbon.

Deteriorating soil health is a significant challenge for farmers. The crushed rock InPlanet uses not only absorbs carbon but also acts as a fertilizer. Farmers receive the rock powder at no cost. Over time, it restores degraded lands, increases crop yields and nutrition, and boosts farmer incomes.

Why Enhanced Rock Weathering?

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) expedites the natural process of rock breakdown by crushing rock and spreading it on land, increasing the surface area and encouraging faster carbon sequestration. This approach can remove up to 4.4 gigatons of carbon a year by 2050.

Carbon Offset Evaluation

We picked InPlanet because of its innovative, scientifically-rigorous approach. Measuring carbon captured is challenging, costly, and can vary widely based on the soil, crops, and environmental conditions.

InPlanet conducts extensive experiments to reduce carbon removal uncertainty and optimize for agronomic benefits for farmers. InPlanet is helping Enhanced Rock Weathering scale beyond its own projects, contributing data to academic and non-profit research and publishing it for peer review. InPlanet is accelerating policy tailwinds in Brazil, establishing a first-of-its-kind innovation center in Brazil, where research, policy, and practice can collaborate.‍

Commons' Community Impact

The Commons community began supporting InPlanet in 2025 as part of our efforts to scale high-integrity carbon removal solutions.

Commons Offset Portfolio

Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.

With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
