About Exomad Green
Location: Bolivia
Offset Type: Biochar Carbon Removal
Duration: 100+ years
Exomad Green converts sustainably harvested forestry residues into biochar: a stable, carbon-rich output that improves soil health and drought resistance.
Typically, these forestry residues would be burned in open areas, resulting in CO2 released into the atmosphere, greater pollution, and risk of wildfires. Instead, Exomad burns the residues in a controlled, low-oxygen environment, which leaves behind the carbon-rich material.
Biochar’s high carbon content helps it resist degradation, with sequestration lasting potentially hundreds of years. By restoring degraded lands and increasing crop yields, biochar usage can also help mitigate forest-clearing for agriculture.

Why Biochar?
Biochar is a readily deployable solution that can sequester carbon sequester carbon for 100s of years. It leverages existing biomass residues, technologies, and farming land, positioning it to scale rapidly. It has significant benefits for farmers and local economies.

Carbon Offset Evaluation
We picked Exomad because of its promising progress to date and scalability, co-benefits, and transparency.
As of 2025, Exomad has delivered more carbon removals than any other project on the market – by almost double. Its sustainable forestry operations have provided straightforward access to waste biomass, and an existing infrastructure to begin operating from. Exomad’s credits are certified by Puro.
Local farmers in the project region have limited access to fertilizer. The reigning agricultural practice is to clear the land of trees, farm until the soil is depleted, and then engage in slash-and-burn agriculture to compensate for the yield loss.
Exomad donates their biochar to local farmers for free. By improving soil health, it not only increases crop yields and incomes for farmers, but it also reduces the need for future clear-cutting.

Commons Offset Portfolio
Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.
With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
