About X-Hazil

Project Location:
Mexico

Offset Type: Forest Conservation and Restoration

Duration: 100 years

The X-Hazil project is conserving and restoring 24,500 hectares of ejido-owned forest in the Yucatan Peninsula. This area has both a history of commercial timber extraction and a near-term risk of small-scale deforestation.

The support from the Commons community ensures the area is protected and restored through small-scale planting of rare native species.

Why forest restoration?

Trees inhale carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen. Research shows that forests store about 30% of all human emissions each year. Project Drawdown estimates that forest restoration and protection can store up to 122 gigatons more carbon over the next 30 years.

We prioritize projects that deliver real ownership and tangible benefits to communities, as forests provide critical livelihoods for those who live around them. Nearly half of the X-Hazil project funding goes directly to the ejidos. The ejidos split that income amongst the community or invest it across improvements in healthcare, education, search and rescue, and ecotourism infrastructure.

Forests are rich hotspots for biodiversity. This project operates in a biodiversity-rich area home to over 350 plant species, including endangered floral species. It also is home to rare animal species like crocodiles, crested guans, howler monkeys, ocelots, margays, and jaguars. Together our community is protecting critical biodiversity, while keeping carbon locked in forests.‍

Commons Offset Portfolio

Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.

With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
