Commons Offset Portfolio: Mati Carbon

About Mati Carbon
Location: India
Offset Type: Enhanced Rock Weathering
Duration: 1,000+ years
Mati Carbon integrates finely crushed rock powder into farming systems, accelerating natural weathering processes that capture atmospheric CO₂ and transform it into stable carbonates that are ultimately transported into rivers and oceans.
Mati’s first project applies rock powder in flooded rice paddies, where waterlogged conditions accelerate weathering and enable durable carbon capture. Beyond carbon removal, the rock powder enriches soils with essential nutrients, improving yields and crop quality. By providing it free of cost, Mati helps farmers increase their incomes while building long-term soil health.
The rock powder is a waste by-product from existing mining operations in the Deccan Traps.

Why Enhanced Rock Weathering?
Enhanced Rock Weathering is a readily deployable solution capable of locking away carbon for thousands of years. By utilizing existing farmland and abundant mining byproducts, it offers a pathway to rapid, large-scale deployment. In addition to climate benefits, ERW enhances farmer livelihoods and strengthens local economies
Carbon Offset Evaluation
We picked Mati because of its promising progress to date and scalability, co-benefits, and transparency.
Mati’s approach is unique compared to other Enhanced Rock Weathering companies because it focuses on smallholder farmers. These farmers’ livelihoods are disproportionately impacted by climate change, and also stand to gain the largest improvements in crop yields and income. Mati’s work also creates local jobs.
Mati won the $50m XPRIZE in 2025 for this transformative, locally-led approach.
The Commons community is supporting projects with local communities in India. Mati’s approach improves farmer yields, nutrition, and ultimately income, while also supporting the local economy.
Commons' Community Impact
The Commons community started supporting Mati in 2025, supporting their rapid scale up.
Commons Offset Portfolio
Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.
With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
