About Recoolit

Project Location: Indonesia

Offset Type: Refrigerant Destruction

Duration: Permanent

Every AC unit depends on refrigerants (HFCs) to operate, but these gases are often vented into the atmosphere due to a lack of regulatory enforcement. When released, HFCs have a global warming potential up to 3,400 times that of CO2. Destroying the HFCs from just one refrigerator avoids emitting between 0.1 - 0.3 tons of CO2e.

While venting is legally prohibited, Recoolit addresses the enforcement gap by incentivizing gas capture. It provides specialized training, equipment, and logistical support to local technicians and labor unions, which typically results in a 10-20% income gain for technicians per visit. Recoolit operates in Indonesia, where refrigerant emissions are estimated at 30 million tons annually

Recoolit operates a transparent, proprietary registry that allows buyers to trace the complete molecular journey of the gas from its initial source through to final destruction and has partnered with Isometric to ensure independent verification by a third-party.

Why refrigerant destruction?

Climate nonprofit Project Drawdown estimates that refrigerant management efforts can prevent up to 57 gigatons of carbon emissions by 2050.

Beyond contributing to global warming, refrigerants also harm our planet’s ozone layer, a vital shield against harmful UV radiation. Recoolit’s work is increasingly critical as demand for air conditioning is estimated to surge 3x by 2050.

Carbon Offset Evaluation

We selected Recoolit because its work fills a critical gap in the refrigerant management space. Their innovative and scalable model is supported by leading buyers, including Google, which has purchased 250,000 carbon credits. Ongoing support helps Recoolit scale, reduce costs, and ensure additionality, as project activities are funded exclusively through carbon offset revenue.

Commons Offset Portfolio

Supporting carbon offsets can be a powerful way to invest in green technologies and protect natural ecosystems. But they aren’t a silver bullet – each project has a unique set of risks.

With the Commons Offset Portfolio, we do the work to maximize your impact. Just as you wouldn’t put all your money into one stock – we don’t put all your dollars into a single offset project.
