Jane Goodall’s Final Words and Her Lifelong Fight for the Planet

Jane Goodall, born in London on April 3, 1934, transformed the way the world understands animals and the natural world. From a young age, she was captivated by wildlife, spending hours observing, collecting, and imagining the lives of birds, insects, and other creatures around her. This curiosity and empathy guided her groundbreaking work with chimpanzees and her lifelong fight for the planet.

What Did Jane Goodall Do?

In 1960, she began her journey in primatology, traveling to the forests of Gombe, Tanzania, to study chimpanzees. Her patient observations revealed that these primates use tools, form complex social bonds, and experience emotions remarkably like humans. Her groundbreaking work transformed primatology and reshaped how humans understand their connection to the animal kingdom.

Beyond research, Jane became a tireless advocate for the planet. She founded the Jane Goodall Institute, which focuses on wildlife conservation, reforestation, and community-led sustainability programs. Through initiatives like Roots & Shoots, she inspired generations of young people to take meaningful action for the environment.

Jane Goodall’s Final Interview

In her last interview, recorded shortly before her death on September 29, 2025, and released posthumously, Jane shared a poignant message: even in the face of climate crises, hope remains. “Don’t lose hope,” she urged. “If you lose hope, you become apathetic and do nothing.” She emphasized that intentional actions like planting trees, reducing waste, protecting wildlife, and more can collectively make a real difference.

Jane balanced urgency with warmth and humor. “There are people I don't like, and I would like to put them on one of Musk's spaceships and send them all off to the planet he's sure he's going to discover.” The quip landed with a smile but carried a pointed message: protecting the planet requires accountable leadership.

Jane Goodall’s life embodied curiosity, courage, and compassion. Her research expanded science, her advocacy energized communities, and her final words remind us that our choices matter. As she said, “Your life matters, and you are here for a reason.”
