You don’t need a lot of stuff to garden, but the more you do it, the more the stuff tends to pile up. Gardeners are often very generous with their materials and supplies, and they’re happy to share! Your local Buy Nothing group may be able to help you stock up on everything you need to get started or level up your gardening setup. Here are some things to consider asking your neighbors for.

Tools

When a hand shovel won’t do or you need a rake to break up some soil, your neighbors are a great first stop. Often, folks will have old tools gathering dust (and possibly rust) in their garages, and they’ll be happy to give them to you — to borrow or to keep.

Seeds

Whether saving seeds from their own plants or going through a back stock of seed packets, folks in your Buy Nothing group probably have plenty of seeds to share! You could even consider hosting a seed swap.

Pots and Containers

From plastic nursery pots to classic terracotta pots, your neighbors' sheds could be a goldmine of containers for you to start seeds or stock your patio with potted plants.

Soil and Amendments

Anyone who gardens has known the frustration of running out of potting soil or compost. Folks are often happy to share soil, fertilizer, mulch, or other planting materials to help you fill your beds and pots.

Plants

Why not get a head start? Folks are refreshing their gardens, and they’re often very willing to share from their abundance of plants. Ask your neighbors for cuttings, seedlings, or full plants.
