What Do Longer Growing Seasons Mean for Gardeners?

Across the U.S., growing seasons, the window between the last spring frost and the first fall frost, are getting longer.
This trend can be linked to climate change, which is raising temperatures worldwide; in U.S. cities, summer temperatures have risen by 97% compared to 1970.
The growing season has been expanding in most states, especially in the West, parts of the Northeast, and some Southern states. In a few places, the growing season has lengthened by more than a month.
California, for instance, has gained around 47 additional growing days between 1895 and 2023. EPA data indicates that most of this increase occurred in the last 30 years of the study period (1895–2023).
A longer growing season may seem like extra weeks of frost-free time, but it comes with trade-offs like hotter summers, shifting rainfall patterns, and longer pest seasons.
Changing Growing Seasons in Different Parts of The U.S.
Northeastern states have seen some of the largest increases in growing seasons. That can mean more time to grow warm-weather crops like peppers and tomatoes, but it can also bring more pests and plant diseases.
Similarly, several Western states, including California, Washington, Arizona, and Utah, have been among the biggest gainers. Longer harvest windows can support a wider variety of crops, but they can also put added strain on irrigation resources.
In the South, Florida has gained four or more weeks of growing time, while neighboring states haven’t seen such dramatic changes. In fact, Georgia was the only state to see a decline in its growing season.
The Midwest has also seen longer growing seasons, but it comes with its share of insects and pests.
How Can Gardeners Adapt to Longer Growing Seasons?
Those extra frost-free weeks can benefit gardeners, who may be able to harvest tomatoes later into autumn and grow vegetables like peppers that need longer stretches of warmth. They can also keep flowering plants blooming for longer.
The USDA also notes that later first frosts in autumn can lead to greater growth and productivity, as long as temperatures don’t exceed the upper limits for growth.
Warmer conditions can also make it easier for pests like squash vine borers, Japanese beetles, and stink bugs to stick around longer. According to the USDA, longer warm periods may also allow multiple insect generations per season—and more generations per year.
Overall, it’s a mixed bag for gardeners. Here are a few things to watch out for:
- Watch for heat stress (leaf scorch, bolting, blossom drop) and add shade/heat-tolerant varieties where needed.
- Be ready for both drought stretches and sudden downpours; improve soil organic matter and drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Expect common pests to stick around later into fall (and start earlier in spring), so monitoring needs to last longer.
- Longer warmth/humidity windows can increase fungal and bacterial issues; prioritize airflow, spacing, and removing infected leaves quickly.
- Earlier spring thaws don’t eliminate late frosts. Use row covers and protect tender seedlings until conditions stabilize.
- If using row covers, remember to remove them when plants need pollination, or yields can suffer.
- Longer seasons can strain watering routines and local water availability; plan efficient watering (ideally mornings) and mulch.
- Adjust planting and succession schedules (and keep notes year to year) so flowering/fruiting doesn’t collide with peak heat or pest surges.
