Summer Sandals from 5 Sustainable Brands

A great pair of sandals can last you through several summers, from vacations to nights out. If yours are looking worse for wear, or you want to try a new style, our curated selection features sustainable brands that prioritize both style and the planet.

You'll find everything from ocean-bound plastic creations to premium leather sourced from certified sustainable tanneries. Many of these brands even offer take-back programs for recycling.

Nisolo

Go-To Flatform Sandal 2.0

If you are looking for a core, evergreen leather collection of flat sandals, check out Nisolo. The brand uses Leather Working Group-certified leather to make footwear and accessories. It rates every product across 200 sustainability metrics and clearly puts the social and environmental impact on every product page. The BCorp-certified brand also runs a take-back program that accepts its own brand's shoes for recycling.

Rothy’s

The Slide Sandal

Rothy’s makes its sandals collection using ocean-bound plastic. The brand uses yarn that comes from 100% post-consumer recycled plastic bottles. The brand sometimes blends this with sustainable materials like natural hemp and organic cotton to create sandals that can be machine-washed in cold water and air-dried. These sandals come in 100% recycled cardboard and recycled paper. The brand even runs a take-back program that accepts its own brand's items for recycling.

Everlane

The Day Crossover Sandal

Everlane’s collection of sandals is made from soft leather. The brand sources its leather from a Gold or Silver-rated tannery by the Leather Working Group (LWG). These tanneries demonstrate best practices in environmental compliance and performance capabilities. All the other materials that the brand uses are part of either Bluesign®, GOTS, or GRS restricted-substance standards. To reduce the impact of its shipping emissions, the brand uses FSC-certified material, 100% recycled paper stock, and encourages customers to choose ground shipping.

REI

Criss Cross Sandals

REI offers the widest range of sandals among these brands, though not all options are sustainable. To find sustainable choices, use filters like Recycled Materials, Leather Working Group, and Bluesign. The brand provides resale and repair services for both its own brand and other brands it carries. As a Climate Neutral-certified company, REI measures and publicly discloses its company-wide greenhouse gas emissions.

Reformation

Flat Sandals

Reformation's flat sandals are made from two types of materials: verified deadstock fabric (aging, leftover, and over-ordered fabric from factories) or leather from Leather Working Group gold and silver-rated tanneries. These sandals are sustainably manufactured in Brazil. The brand offers a take-back program for recycling and reselling its items.
